How "The KIDD" came to Bullhead City, Laughlin & Fort Mohave
KIDD was born in a dusty old section of Route 66 known as Essex, California when it was discovered by long time Arizona Broadcasters Sanford and Terry Cohen. After some practical engineering work, this 103.9 FM abandoned frequency found new life as Fort Mohave’s new radio station. However, fate was soon to lend a hand!
Cohen's friend and engineer, Jay Brentlinger, had left Arizona to form a group of stations in his home state of Arkansas when one day a knock came at his door. Sure enough, a fellow broadcaster had been let go in an acquisition across town and was looking for a safe place to land. After a few moments they both realized they had worked at KOOL-AM in Phoenix. But wait! It gets better!
After a complete discussion when Jay was getting ready to make this local broadcaster an offer of employment, he asked one more fateful question of the applicant. “Is this the area here in Arkansas you want to be working in?” And he replied, “Well, if I had my choice I would really like to find a radio job in Bullhead City, Arizona! My Aunt lives in Fort Mohave and I went and visited her recently and I just love the place!”
Jay Brentlinger went wide-eyed and said to the applicant, “Well I can’t promise you anything, but friends of mine have just opened a brand-new station in Fort Mohave and I can give them a call for you.” He did. And that’s how Randy Mack became the voice of The KIDD on JACK FM 103.9 in Bullhead City, Laughlin, Ft Mohave, Needles, etc etc!
As icing on the cake, the KIDD call letters came available from a station in Monterey, CA and the Cohens grabbed them up! The sun, the moon and the stars all lined up in perfect order just for the Colorado River Valley. We are all fortunate as a result!
